4.1.7 Inter-Country Adoption |
RELEVANT LEGISLATION AND GUIDANCE
Adoption and Children Act 2002
Adoption Agencies Regulations 2005
Adoptions with a Foreign Element Regulations 2005
SCOPE OF THIS CHAPTER
This procedure applies to the assessment and approval of applicants resident in Peterborough who wish to adopt a child who is resident abroad and the placement of a child resident abroad with approved adopters. Peterborough City Council have an agreement with Parents and Children Together (PACT), a registered adoption agency, to carry out this work on Peterborough's behalf.
All requests for information about inter country adoption made by telephone or letter will be responded to promptly. Staff in the Adoption Team will establish that the caller lives in Peterborough and if so, discuss with him or her whether they may be interested in considering the possibility of domestic adoption as well as inter country adoption. If so, they will be sent the Information Pack within 5 working days and the Assessment and Approval of Adoptive Parents Procedure will be followed.
Where they wish to pursue inter country adoption they will be advised of Peterborough’s agreement with Parents and Children Together (PACT) (see Contact Details Appendix) to undertake the preparation, assessment and approval of inter-country adopters on its behalf, and a referral to that agency will be made.
The social worker/team manager will record the action taken and maintain a file of all the information obtained.
